One day I was going through some old rejected images om my hard drive and found this. The reason I rejected if from the start was that I felt the colors in the background distracted too much, taking the emphasis away from the guy. This was back in 2007 when I still mostly shot in color, but I decided to give it a go and try converting it to black and white.
I was quite surprised of what a conversion can do with an image like this. In b/w, the distracting colors is under control and the guy – the main character of the scene – stands out quite nice. I think this was the moment I fell in love with black and white. As a street photographer you hardly ever have the time to check for color issues while shooting, since the moment is the trigger. But messy palettes are not the end of it, as I think this images shows.
It is interesting that I’ve just posted today on my blog about B&W vs. color
And you´re making a good point in it, Greg. Couldn´t agree more.
